Versatile Midsize SUV Loaded With Tech And Performance Features
The 2022 Ford Explorer continues the tradition of being a roomy three-row SUV with substantial technology, cargo space, and performance features. Ford offers the spacious Explorer in several trims for drivers who want a comfortable daily driver, a luxurious ride, or an off-road toy. The automaker outfits the Explorer with several tech features, like helpful driver-assistive technology and an easy-to-use infotainment system.
Two Satisfying Engine Options
The large SUV needs a powertrain that can drive it down the road. Ford offers two choices in the 2022 model. The first is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This model delivers an EPA-estimated 21/28 MPG.
Drivers who want more pep under the hood can upgrade to the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that delivers 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. The EPA-estimated fuel economy on the larger engine is 18/26 MPG.
Ford pairs both engines with a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission. The Explorer comes standard with rear-wheel drive, but buyers can add all-wheel drive, which lowers the fuel economy slightly on both engines.
Drivers who want an off-road model can choose the Timberline trim. Ford outfits it with tuned shock absorbers and a limited-slip differential to successfully navigate dirt trails. The Explorer can also tow up to 5,600 pounds when properly equipped.
Leading The Way With Standard High-Tech Features
Ford leads the way in adding safety features to all vehicles. The 2022 Ford Explorer comes equipped with Ford Co-Pilot360 technology, and the base trim has Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Pre-Collision Warning and Braking, Auto High Beam Headlights, and a Driver Attention Monitor. The standard safety features also include Rear Parking Sensors and a Rearview Camera.
The base Explorer also comes with an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a pair of USB ports, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
The latest addition to the Explorer trim is the Explorer ST-line with technology like a Surround-View Parking Camera System, Wireless Device Charging, and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.
Ford adds Front Parking Sensors and optional Power-Folding Third-Row Seats to the Limited trim. The Ford ST trim includes the turbo V6 engine as a standard feature along with the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The King Ranch and Platinum trims come with additional technology and luxury features like leather seats and premium trim. The Platinum includes Park Assist and Adaptive Headlights.
